Originating in Russia but now growing in popularity around the world, and relatively easy to get your hands on, kettlebells are the perfect at-home workout. They take up very little space, are easy to store and give you one hell of a workout.
But let me offer a word of caution; if you have never used kettles before then be warned; consult with a personal trainer first and get him to write you a training program as well as teach you how to use them correctly.
Kettlebells have an above average incidence of injury when used incorrectly and without proper form (don’t worry – they are fine once you master the process).
Okay, so kettlebells aren’t cheap to buy but they do give you plenty of bang for your buck. It is much better than spending thousands of your hard earned on a multi-function trainer which will probably end up spending most of its time in the corner of a room somewhere gathering dust (soon after the novelty has worn off).
With a properly formulated program and giving each session all you’ve got you are looking at burning around 1200 calories an hour from this type of exercise so it is well worth the effort…….and believe me it does take some effort if you go the whole hog for a full hour.
All you will need for a good workout is a couple of kettlebells in weights that suit your level of fitness and a decent instructional video to follow. If you are new to this form of exercise then you will find it worth your while to locate a kettlebell class at your local gym where they will show you how to master the technique.
A kettlebell workout will dramatically improve your muscular strength but with the added advantage of the high caloric burn rate; it’s great exercise for weight loss as well.
And if you think you might like the idea of a kettlebell workout but haven’t been game to give it a try because you don’t think you are up to that level yet then don’t worry; they come in a wide range of weight and sizes. There is a weight and program to suit every age group and every level of fitness.
